Neva Brown
Neva Brown, Professional angler of Lufkin, Texas, grew up fishing in the Piney Woods of East Texas just 15 minutes from Sam Rayburn.”I spent most of my childhood roaming the woods, wading creeks and sneaking salt pork from my Mom’s refrigerator to go “string” for crawfish.” Neva’s one and only sister spent hours in the house with their Mom learning the normal “girlie” things in life such as embroidery, sewing, and how to crochet. Neva loved her time outside with her Dad who taught her how to play baseball, hunt, skin squirrels and deer and of course to fish!
“I don’t hunt anymore, but I have never lost my love of being on the water and the feel of the initial “hit” of a powerful bass.” Consequently, it is no surprise to anyone when they drive up to the lake house and find a sign saying “Gone Fishing” hanging on the door.
As Neva’s love for fishing grew. Her efforts to find the best lure, worm, and rigging have become almost and obsession and grew from a hobby to a way of life. Being blessed with owning her own business and a supportive husband and family, Neva says, “I am fortunate to find more time on the water and realize it is my tranquility, whether I am catching a fish or just enjoying the beauty of my surroundings.”
As Neva recounts her memories, they start with the time she spent with her Dad as a child to the latest competition on Lake Dardanelle. However, Lake Falcon will always hold a sweet spot in her heart as she caught a 10.0 and a 10.3 bass on back to back casts!
In looking at the present and future, the LBAA is allowing me to continue my fishing passion and also allowed me to once again experience once again the camaraderie with fellow women anglers who have the same passion for the sport. “With 2010 being my first year to fish the Pro side competitively and with the continued efforts of the LBAA founders and board, I see the LBAA becoming the greatest organization that has happened to women’s bass fishing. You can read about fishing tournaments in magazines and watch television shows, but it does not compare to the thrill and excitement of waiting for the morning take-off or sitting waiting anxiously as fellow anglers cross the stage with their bags of fish to see who has had the most successful day.
I believe in every aspect of the LBAA. It’s mission to support the sport of fishing for women and to encourage our future generation of young women speaks for itself. Hope to see you on the water!
