The Lady Bass Anglers Association kicked off the 2021 season on Lake Ray Hubbard in Garland, Texas. The anglers faced ever changing conditions during the three and a half days of practice and then the two days of competition.

Everyone coming to Texas in March is expecting larger than normal bags and larger fish due to the spawn. While the anglers were still able to bring in some decent bags and big fish to the scales. The everchanging weather is a normal factor for the ladies. We had hoped the lake would be in full spawn but the wave of fish moving to spawning areas had been pushed back due to the late and prolonged cold weather Texas faced in February. These things did not deter the ladies who all combined brought in just over 300lbs of fish to the scales over two days.

Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Georgia came from behind to win the event with a two-day total of 29.42 lbs. and a big bass of 5.80 lbs. on day one. When asked about the keys to her success Wells stated, “With the winds we had during competition days, my power poles played a significant role in my success. I was fishing very specific areas within the grass and it would have been impossible to target those small areas with the wind. Also, Gamma fluorocarbon line allowed me to fish a smaller diameter line. I actually caught my big fish on 14 lb. Gamma fluorocarbon over behind a line of grass, the fish actually got hung in the grass and the line held until we could get to her. I need to thank Bainbridge for all their help and support, Gamma Line, Lowrance electronics, Mercury, Stanley Jigs, Power Pole, Caymas Boats, Interstate batteries and E.E.S. inc. Special thanks to LBAA and their staff for all the hard work. Last, I need to thank the good Lord for without him I would be nothing.” Finishing second place was Murchison, Texas Pro Pam Ridgle who brought 26.73 lbs. to the scales and won the Joey Ridgle Septic and Sanitation Big Bass Award for her 6.20lber. Rounding out the top five are Bradyville, TN pro DeAnna Lovvorn in third; Chandler, TX Pro Alisa Johnson in fourth and Arkansas Rookie Pam Horn in fifth place.

In the Co-Angler Division, Sherry Jacks of Clanton, Alabama outlasted a charge from Diana Uebelhack of Otwell, Indiana. Jacks two-day weight was 18.30lbs. with 12.44lbs. coming to the scales on day one. Ubelhack’s two-day weight was 18.06 lbs! In comments from Jacks, “the key baits for me were bladed jigs on seawalls and Texas rig worm. My boater day 1 sat us on key targets and fish. Day 2 was fishing reeds and pitching to scattered grass in coves. Special thanks to Deanna and Shannon for excellent boater skills. Thanks to my sponsors, Crusher Lures, Duckett Fishing and Rapala USA.” “For co-anglers, it is critical to adapt to the conditions. Making the most of each fishing situation is up to me. For this tournament, my ability to adapt made the difference in my success.” Rounding out the top five you have Arkansas angler Cindy Adler-Jackson in third; Texas angler Charlotte Frazer in fourth and in fifth is Dana Rabon of South Carolina!

Our final event of the weekend was a partnership with Pond Hopper Nation to bring a free kid’s event to the area. One hundred and twenty kids were in attendance during the day. Kids and their families were scheduled at various times during the day to allow for safety and social distancing. Every kid who attended walked away with a free rod and reel and some sort of gifts that had been donated by sponsors of Pond Hopper Nation, Cabela’s of Fort Worth and Bass Pro Shops of Garland.

Special thanks go to the City of Garland for inviting us and sponsoring this event. Another round of thanks goes to Bass Pro Shops Garland for allowing our weigh-in to take place on their boat pad and for taking the fish down and releasing them back into the lake. Our host hotel was the Holiday Inn Express and Suites. They did an amazing job of taking care of the anglers, staff, and fans. They found a way to provide a hot breakfast each morning with social distancing and sanitation protocols all in place.

We are fortunate to have amazing tour sponsors. Presenting Sponsor Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, Supporting Sponsors Joey Ridgle Septic and Sanitation, Livingston Lures and HITEC Outdoors. Promoting sponsors Shipp’s Marine Services and Vickie’s Threadworks. Other sponsors and recognitions go to Yo-Zuri Custom Baits, Lauren’s Legacy, and Toyota Bonus Bucks.
